When was NFP founded?
NFP was founded by dedicated Internet freedom activists in 2012.
Where does NFP work?
NFP is based in Los Angeles, California, but works in many regions across the world, including the Middle East, North America, and East Asia. Since 2012, NFP has conducted more than 20 projects across three continents, in six countries.
How is NFP funded?
NFP has received grants from private and public sources, including the U.S. Government, the National Endowment for Democracy, USAID, and Internews, among others. You can view some of our partners and sponsors here.
Where does NFP's funding go?
All funding we receive goes directly toward implementing our projects across the world. Over more than a decade, NFP has employed over 100 people and implemented more than 20 projects. A majority of the grants we receive are restricted to specific, timebound projects, and therefore may only be used to cover costs related to that project, such as computer engineers, content curators, translators, and satellite airtime, among other items. Funds budgeted for a project in one country may not be used for a separate project in a different country.
NFP takes its accountability to donors seriously, ensuring that each dollar is spent responsibility and in the most efficient manner. While not all our work can be made public for the safety and security of our beneficiaries and staff, we submit regular, comprehensive reports to the relevant donors.
As a U.S. nonprofit organization (EIN: 45-5274850), we are subject to an annual audit and our Form 990 records are made available to the public.
Does NFP only work on Starlink?
No. NFP works on a variety of projects, including but not limited to Toosheh satellite filecasting service, VPNs, offline social media, and “lite” news sites.
